Three people in the U.S.A. team, including the two coaches, are Chinese American. Another member is half Chinese, half Indian
On July 16th, the USA team took first place at the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Thailand. After 21 years of persistent effort, America finally won the IMO.
The good news immediately became a U.S. hot topic. According to the Washington Post, "U.S.A. beats China in IMO, wins first place for the first time in 21 years". For a champion that has waited this long, people were excited about the fact that China loses rather than winning. For years, the NO.1 spot always went to China. Take a look at the past 20 years IMO champions list, China won 14 times.
The U.S.A. team found remarkably diversity. There are two Chinese American students on the team, and the coach as well as the assistant coach are also Chinese American. American Netizens commented saying, "doesn't look like America."
China Daily made a bold assumption about "what if a USA team participates without Chinese Americans." From 2000 to 2015, ten times the percentage of Chinese Americans on the team has exceeded one half.
