China and the United States will hold their seventh round of the Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) and the sixth Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) in Washington from June 23-24. The S&ED and CPE are communication platforms between the two countries with the largest number of participating departments and widest topics. So far, the S&ED has produced over 700 concrete results and the CPE also has produced over 300 concrete results.
This round of dialogue has attracted much attention as it happens before Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the US in September.
Daniel R. Russel, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said that the S&ED is a routine platform aiming to promote US-China cooperation and control differences. He thinks that the dialogue enables US-China cooperation to make further progress and promotes bilateral ties. This round of dialogue will cover wide topics and lay a solid foundation for President Xi's state visit to the US. The purpose of the dialogue is not to cover problems but to solve problems.
Douglas H. Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told People's Daily that this year's dialogue will be based on the consensus reached by President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping in their Zhongnanhai meeting last November. In a sense, the dialogue is part of the preparation for President Xi's visit.
