2,908 local officials probed for duty breach: SPP

BEIJING, June 12 -- Chinese prosecutors investigated 2,908 officials for dereliction of duty from January to April of 2015, according to the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) on Friday.

The suspects, including 83 officials at county-level or above, were involved in 2,104 cases, nearly half of which were related to embezzlement of public funds.

The officials were mainly functionaries of law-enforcement departments, including the authorities of agriculture, land and resources, forestry and housing.

Half of the cases were characterized as serious or extremely serious, while all the 2,104 combined caused 363 deaths, 70 serious injuries and economic losses worth of nearly 3 billion yuan (480 million U.S. dollars).
