TAIYUAN, May 29 -- A Chinese university student has been rescued after being kidnapped in Myanmar, police said on Friday.

Police in the Chinese city of Taiyuan received a call earlier this month that a university student in the city had been kidnapped after he failed to pay money he lost while gambling in the Southeast Asian country.

Chinese police then contacted Myanmar police and the two sides worked to rescue the student, Taiyuan police said.

Police did not offer details of the rescue operation.

The student went to Myanmar with two friends, hoping to make money from gambling, according to Taiyuan police.

He then lost the money he borrowed and was prevented from leaving by local forces unless the gambling debt was paid, Taiyuan police said.
