Plastic surgery disputes in S. Korea on the rise (2)

One of the major reasons for cosmetic surgery failures is that it is too easy to set up as a plastic surgeon. Many Korean "doctors" are not qualified plastic surgeons at all. In order to cut costs, some of these "ghost doctors" will perform the surgery instead of an experienced plastic surgeon once the patient is unconscious. Another potential risk is intermediary agents in the plastic surgery industry chain. According to Korean media, intermediary agents often take as much as 30 to 50 percent of surgery fees. Last year alone, 87 percent of foreign patients undergoing plastic surgery in South Korea were introduced by intermediary agents. In addition, the cost of surgery for Chinese patients is usually 2 to 3 times higher than for local Koreans.

Zhang Bin notes that going to South Korea for plastic surgery is very risky. Disadvantages like high cost, time-consuming procedures, and the fact that any resulting litigation can only be handled in Korea mean that Chinese patients' rights cannot be effectively protected. Zhang advises Chinese patients to find qualified and official organizations and agents, and sign detailed contracts to make sure of their obligations and rights before they go to South Korea for plastic surgery.

Zhang Yan, a researcher at Shannxi Academy of Social Science comments that many young people today think they can rely on their appearance to stand out. They are still immature and lack self-confidence, a positive outlook on life, a sense of self-worth, and a balanced set of values. Zhang suggests that it is the goodness inside that makes a wholesome person. Improving your personal qualities is much more important than spending large sums of money on plastic surgery. After all, wisdom and morality weigh much more than good looks.
