The Gaoligong Mountains are located in the southern part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and cover five bands of altitudes. The Gaoligong Mountains are noted for a complete transition from temperate to tropical forest that is rare in the world and provide a shelter for a large number of flora and fauna, especially the rare and endemic species.
The Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve was established in 1983 and rated as an A-level protected area in 1992. UNESCO accepted it as a Biosphere Reserve member in 2000. The reserve is also part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Photo/People.cn)
