
JAKARTA, March 26 -- Visiting Twitter Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dick Costolo met with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Thursday, discussing ways to enhance cooperation between the social media and the government.
Costolo said Twitter is popular in Indonesia, as 250 million people here are digitally savvy population, among whom is Kalla.
The vice president uses Twitter account to communicate with his constituents, Costolo said.
Costolo said Twitter can work together with the government to facilitate real-time digital communication in times of emergency, among others.
"Like in flooding situation, the platform can make sure that people can be alerted right away, supplied with information on closest shelters they can refuge to," said Costolo.
Kalla said the Indonesian government expects that the growing use of social media and digital communication technology in the country would lead to improvement of the nation's creative industry.
"Indonesia has abundant of talented creative people in digital industry," Kalla said, adding that Twitter can recruit more of Indonesian staffs and explore their talents.
Indonesia was the second leg of Costolo's Asian tour after India.
During his week-long visit in the Southeast Asia's largest economy, Costolo is scheduled to have meetings with government officials, business partners, mobile operators, entertainment partners and customers, in an effort to boost more international revenue.
