Chen Qiuyan, 27, should have married her boyfriend last year and been living a happy life, but for a road accident. On Jan. 31, 2014, Chen Qiuyan’s brother was riding a motor scooter when he collided with a trash can by the road side. He sustained serious head and chest injuries. He is now paralyzed. Chen Qiuyan’s family have spent 500,000 yuan on medical treatment. The family is 300,000 yuan in debt. To repay these debts, Qiuyan has to do three jobs.
Qiuyan has to get up at 7 o’clock to go to her job as an accountant with an investment company. She finishes her work and then goes to another company to do more accounting. After dinner, she has to work in a bar. “I get home at 1 a.m. every day, and I can only sleep for 5 hours,” she says. Even so, her income is not enough to cover her brother’s medical costs.
To make matters worse, her boyfriend broke off the engagement after the accident because of her family burden. Qiuyan is a strong girl. She doesn't blame her ex-boyfriend for breaking off the engagement: “I don’t blame him because my burden is so heavy.”
