BEIJING, Jan. 12 -- China is aiming to speed up its environmental protection and improvement, especially to solve the smog trouble in and around Beijing, by taking the advantage of Beijing 2022 efforts.
According to the 2022 Winter Olympics candidature file released on Monday, the concept and measures of sustainability will be implemented in all aspects of Beijing 2022.
Clean energies will be developed and energy-saving and eco-friendly technologies and products will be applied extensively in the coming years in Beijing and surrounding cities.
Measures to protect forests, wetlands and the atmosphere will be adopted as early as possible, so as to rapidly improve the ecological environment of Beijing and Zhangjiakou and elevate the Games-time air quality in 2022 to the standards of the WHO.
The local Organizing Committee will abide by the latest national laws and regulations on energy, environment, architecture and resources, and the requirements of the carbon emissions reduction plan of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
The Organizing Committee will adopt the standardized and internationalized sustainability management knowledge and approaches.
Beijing will formulate guides on 2022 sustainable development, establish and implement both the Beijing 2022 sustainability management system and criteria system.
Beijing is making every effort to carry out the "Clean Air Action Plan 2013-2017". The specific measures stipulated in the plan include:
Changing the energy structure, significantly reducing the usage of coal from 23 million tons to less than 10 million tons, developing and using photovoltaic and wind power, reducing emissions from automobiles, implementing China VI (equivalent to EURO VI) standard;
Strictly conducting industrial environmental emission standard to shut off and phase out 1,200 enterprises with high emissions;
Strengthening the elaborate management of construction sites to reduce dust, improving regional prevention and control mechanism through cooperation of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei and encouraging the public engagement to prevent and reduce pollution.
The investment from the municipal government to improve air quality is expected to reach RMB 48.1 billion (7.829 billion US dollars), and the investment from social sectors to reach RMB 760 billion (123.698 billion US dollars) by 2017, which will be a strong guarantee for the significant improvement of air quality in Beijing and its surrounding areas.
Beijing will soon issue the Beijing Environmental Master Plan (2015-2030), of which clean air is a main subject, and Beijing will strengthen its efforts in the overall protection of the ecological environment.
The city's air quality during the Games will meet the standards set by the WHO.
