HOUSTON, Jan. 6  -- A gunman opened fire at a veterans' medical clinic in the U.S. state of Texas Tuesday, killing a doctor before "apparently" committing suicide, local media reported.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at the El Paso Veteran Affairs Health Care System in Fort Bliss in west Texas, about 1,000 km from Houston, according to the El Paso Times.

The newspaper, quoting the office of U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, who represents El Paso, said the gunman shot the doctor before "apparently" taking his own life.

John Meza, spokesman for O'Rourke, however, said later they have not confirmed that information.

At a press conference held on Tuesday evening, Fort Bliss Maj. Gen. Stephen Twitty confirmed the shooter was killed along with one victim. He did not provide other details though.

Earlier reports by multiple media outlets said the doctor was wounded but did not have his conditions.

The motive for the shooting is not immediately clear. Authorities have not identified either the gunman or the victim.

The shooting was initially reported at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, a hospital adjacent to the veterans' clinic, but officials later said there was no shooting there.

Fort Bliss, the U.S. Army's second-largest installation, is home to the 1st Armored Division, which returned to U.S. soil in 2011, after 40 years in Germany.
