BEIJING, Jan. 6 -- China's railway police cracked more than 5,700 cases, including 81 criminal cases and 5,640 publicity security cases, since they launched a special campaign on Dec. 7, they announced on Tuesday.

The police also confiscated 5 tonnes of stolen railway equipment and disbanded 138 illegal material collection spots. A total of 3,486 potential safety risks were rectified in the past month.

The campaign was aimed at addressing prominent issues in the country's railway system, high-speed rail in particular, and safeguarding safety with the upcoming travel peak seen during the traditional Spring Festival in which hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel by train.

Rail police deployed more police officers for the campaign, strengthening patrol along railways and launching a thorough check of potential safety risks.

They have also coordinated with other departments to crack down on crimes involving stealing railway equipment. They also carried out publicity work in schools and enterprises and mobilized people to provide tip-offs for any violations.

The campaign will last until March 16.
