BEIJING, Jan. 6 -- China will select ten extraordinary doctors who have offered medical aid to Ebola-stricken African people, according to an official statement.

The selection was initiated on Tuesday in Beijing by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC).

The top ten aid doctors will be determined in mid-February from candidates nominated by the NHFPC and the People's Liberation Army (PLA)general logistics department, both responsible for dispatching medical aid teams.

Candidates' work achievements, professional ethics and team spirit will all be factored in. The title winners will be awarded 50,000 yuan (8044.8 U.S. dollars) each for their fight against Ebola in Africa, according to the statement.

Since the outbreak of the deadly virus in February, 2014, China has delivered four rounds of humanitarian aid with a combined value of more than 750 million yuan (120 million U.S. dollars) to Ebola-stricken countries and sent hundreds of medical workers to the African front line.

China has been providing medical aid to Africa since 1963.
