SEOUL, Dec. 15 -- South Korea's unification ministry said Monday that it has allowed an opposition party lawmaker to visit the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to deliver a wreath commemorating the third anniversary of the death of late DPRK leader Kim Jong Il, father of current leader Kim Jong Un.

Rep. Park Ji-won of New Politics Alliance for Democracy will visit Kaesong, border town of the DPRK not far from the demarcation line, along with six other delegates from the Kim Dae Jung Peace Center.

Park, who was a close aide to the late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, will convey the wreath in the name of Lee Hee-ho, the late president's wife, on the occasion of the third anniversary of the death of Kim Jong Il.

Unification Ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-cheol told a press briefing that the government approved the visit as it is to reciprocate the DPRK's wreath in August to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of late South Korean President Kim Dae- jung.

Lim said it would not be desirable to excessively interpret the visit as it comes as part of the sheer humanitarian move.

Park's visit would come as Seoul and Pyongyang failed to hold the second round of high-level dialogue for the scattering of anti- DPRK leaflets by South Korean civic groups. The two Koreas exchanged fires near land and sea borders, while trading words condemning each other.

A separate delegation from Hyundai Asan was also allowed to visit Kaesong Tuesday to deliver the wreath in the name of Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun.

The South Korean company operated several inter-Korean businesses, including a tour to Mount Kumgang, which are currently in suspension.
