ADRID, Sept. 26 -- Manuel Garcia Viejo, the second repatriated Spaniard suffering from the Ebola virus, died on Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed by sources at the Madrid hospital where he had been treated.

He died shortly before 6 p.m. local time after his condition had deteriorated in the previous hours.

The 69-year-olds had arrived at the Carlos III Hospital in the north of Madrid in the early hours of Monday morning in what was described as a "serious" condition suffering from severe dehydration and with his liver and kidney's affected as a result of the virus. He had been diagnosed with Ebola last Friday.

He becomes the second Spaniard to pass away after being brought back 'home' following 75-year-old Miguel Pajares who passed away on August 13 after 6 days of treatment.

In contrast to Pajares, Garcia Viejo did not receive the experimental ZMapp serum, which has produced positive results in some cases, because stocks had run out and although the hospital was looking for alternative treatments, he died before any could be applied.

Garcia Viejo had spent the past 12 years as Medical Director of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in the city of Lunsar in Sierre Leone.
