BEIJING, June 30 -- Beijing Police on Monday launched an inspection of the city's rail traffic system to protect against terrorism risks.

The inspection, covering all the city's 17 train lines and 276 stations, required full coverage of camera surveillance including the garbage disposal area, said a police officer with the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

The inspection will ensure guards are stationed at populous spots, such as security check points, entrances and exits, and interchange tunnels.

Inspectors will also check facilities of firefighting, flood control and emergency response, and test rail transport workers' response to emergencies, the officer said.

In October 2013, Xinjiang separatists drove a vehicle into the crowd in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, killing five and injuring 40.

This coming November, the APEC Leaders Summit -- the most important international event staged by Beijing since the 2008 Olympics -- is scheduled to take place in a new complex in a rural part of the city, prompting strengthened security efforts.
