RECIFE, Brazil, June 29 -- Costa Rica beat Greece on penalties to reach the World Cup quarterfinals here on Sunday.
The two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after the extra time and in the penalty shootout, Costa Rica won 5-4.
Bryan Ruiz put Costa Rica ahead in the 52nd minute but Lazaros Christodoulopoulos scored a shocking equalizer in the 91st.
Costa Rica had played most of the second half with 10 men after Oscar Duarte was sent off for a second yellow card.
Costa Rica will play the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
