Fire Engulfs TV Tower, Traps Four

Firefighters at this hour are battling a blaze that is consuming the world's second-tallest freestanding structure, trying to save four people trapped in an elevator 860 feet above Moscow. The Ostankino television tower became engulfed in flames Sunday, knocking out most TV channels in the Russian capital.

Scores of fire engines encircle the base of the 1,771-foot, needle-like tower, with those vehicles ringed by thousands of spectators. Helicopter pilots are assessing prospects of an air rescue.
