China to Extend Loan for Dhaka Water ProjectChina is to provide 9.5 billion taka (around 190 million U.S. dollars) to Bangladesh for improving water supply in Dhaka city, a Chinese diplomat disclosed here Saturday.According to Zhao Jinqi, economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese Embassy here, the fund will be provided "on the supplier's credit basis." A five-member advance team from China has already conducted a study on the project and expressed their interest in it. China is expected to submit its final report to the Bangladeshi government soon. The main objective of the project, as part of the Fourth Dhaka Water Supply and Sanitation Project, is to increase the quantity of water supplied to consumers by the introduction of a water treatment plant and reduction of water losses through leak detection and rehabilitation. The project proposal prepared by the project consultant said the sanitation system in the Dhaka city area calls for immediate attention with a view to preventing escalated environmental degradation and epidemic outbreak of waterborne diseases and checking rapid water sources pollution which at the present rate is diminishing the chances of sustainable water supply in the city. Besides China, Japan has already promised to provide 20 million dollars for the project.
