NPC Chairman Meets Djibouti National Assembly Speaker

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, met with Said Ibrahim Badoul, speaker of the National Assembly of Djibouti, at the Great Hall of the People Friday afternoon.

Li said relations between China and Djibouti have been progressing smoothly during the over 20 years since the forging of diplomatic ties, and expressed the belief that Badoul's visit would further promote friendship between the two parliaments and the two countries.

He stressed that China advocates multi-polarity in the world, since this is beneficial to world peace and development. All countries, big or small, poor or rich, strong or weak, should be equal members of the world family and enjoy equal rights to participate in international affairs, he noted.

China opposes big or strong countries bullying small or weak ones, and advocates the establishment of a peaceful, stable, just and rational new world political and economic order, Li said. He continued that China stresses its relationship with Djibouti, and is pleased with the latter's realization of ethnic reconciliation and the end of its civil war.

China supports Djibouti and other African counties in their efforts to eradicate poverty and invigorate their economies, he said, expressing appreciation for Djibouti's pursuit of the "One China" policy and its position of not having any official contacts with the Taiwan authorities.

Badoul said during his current visit he has seen with his own eyes the tremendous changes in China, which demonstrate the wisdom, courage and industriousness of the Chinese people.

The National Assembly and the government of Djibouti treasure their relationship with China, and are keen to make unremitting efforts to accelerate this relationship, he said. He also expressed the hope that China would realize its reunification at an early date.

Badoul arrived in Beijing Thursday for a ten-day official good- will visit to China as guest of Li Peng.
