China Xiamen Gets New Mayor

Zhu Yayan was elected mayor of Xiamen, a port city in east China's Fujian Province, at the third session of the 11th Xiamen Municipal People's Congress this morning, which is scheduled to be closed on Sunday.

Zhu Yayan, who will turn 56 in August, is a native of Hui'an County of Fujian Province. He is concurrently Fujian's deputy provincial governor. Formerly, Zhu served twice as the city's vice-mayor respectively from 1987 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1998.

After the outcome of the election was announced, Zhu vowed to work harder still so as to live up to the expectation and trust of the Communist Party and local residents. He pledged to set a good example in fighting against corruption and accepting the supervision by news media and the masses of people.

Also at this morning's meeting, Xiamen's Party Secretary Hong Yongshi announced his resignation as mayor which he has held concurrently.
