Business WTO Chief Expects China's Entry in 2000

Director-General of the World Trade Organization Mike Moore said in Singapore Monday that it is good for all to have China in WTO. He wanted China admitted as a fully-fledged member by the end of the year.

Moore, who is making a one-day stopover in Singapore en route to Indonesia, told a press conference that it will be a splendid day when China comes into WTO and "it will be good for the world, for China, for all WTO members to have China in."

China's entry into WTO will make a perfect society of the world and will represent a very good start, he added.

On his forthcoming visit to China later this week, Moore said he has been invited to China to discuss China's entry into WTO to find out if there are problems that prevent them from joining.

"We are not going to China to change China's politics," he stressed.

Touching on the anxiety about globalization shown at the WTO meeting in Seattle last year and the current UNCTAD meeting in Bangkok, Moore said it is true that not everyone benefits from globalization, which he sees as an economic process, rather than apolitical policy.
