The air quality in most major Chinese cities remained good during the Spring Festival this week, according to a weekly air quality report issued February 12 by the China Environmental Monitoring Center.

Major air pollutants decreased during the traditional Chinese New Year, and cities in east and south China reported good air quality.

From February 4 to 10, the cities of Haikou, Wenzhou, Zhanjiang, Kunming, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen enjoyed excellent air, while Guangzhou, Chongqing, Shanghai, Changsha, Qingdao and 16 other cities reported fairly good air.

However, 13 cities including Xining, Shenyang, Beijing, Taiyuan reported slight air pollution.

Urumqi and Hohhot reported moderate air pollution, while Lanzhou and Shijiazhuang suffered from serious air pollution.

Most of the cities listed suspended particles as the major pollutant. Sulfur dioxide was the major pollutant in Chongqing, Jinan, Guiyang, Changsha and Qingdao, while Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Suzhou reported nitrogen oxide as the main source.
