World US Aircraft Carrier Visits Hong Kong

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis and its battle group arrived in Hong Kong Tuesday for a five-day visit.

"This is a routine visit aimed to give the sailors a chance to rest and relax," said Rear Adm. Gerald Hoewing, John C. Stennis Battle Group commander.

The visit is a symbol of improving relations between Washington and Beijing since both sides had worked for some time to arrange the visit, he said.

The John C. Stennis battle group is composed of seven ships, two submarines and a 71-aircraft air wing.

While in port, the battle group's some 7,000 crews will have a chance for sightseeing, shopping and participating in cultural exchange activities and community relations projects.
