Education China's First Tiger Monograph Published

The biggest wish of Wang Fenling's life has come true with the publication of his comprehensive "Research on Chinese Tiger Culture". Wang, 75, a famous folklorist and professor at Northeast China Teachers University, completed a definitive anthropological, sociological and biological review of tiger-based culture in China and America in the process of completing his work.

Another veteran folklorist, Professor Chen Qingjian, said, " Chinese cultural history will change with the birth of this book."

Duan Baolin, renowned folklorist and professor at Beijing University, said, "This is a comprehensive work on tiger-based culture in China, and much of it is highly original."

The tiger has existed for over one million years, Wang said, and in China it has long been alive in many forms of art, folklore, conventions, and even religion. Throughout history, mankind's attitude toward the tiger has experienced three major phases: worshipping, taming, and protecting the tiger.

Wang, who has studied the subject for more than ten years, said the tiger was once an animal king in the wild and in folk stories, but now it has become an endangered species. Wang hopes his work will arouse people's awareness so they will take better care of this precious creature.

"My book belongs to all the Chinese people," Wang said, adding that he expects it will be published overseas.
