China Urges US Congress to Stop Anti-China Moves
China has demanded that the US Congress immediately stop their moves to infringe on China's sovereignty by passing the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said in Beijing on February 1.
He made the remarks in response to a question on the anti-China act at a regular press conference.
A few US Congressmen have pledged their full support for the approval of the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act, he said. "The nature of their moves is to first broaden US domestic laws so as to form a legal basis for providing all manner of advanced weaponry systems to Taiwan and building up and expanding direct contacts between the armed forces of US and Taiwan," Zhu said.
He added that their actions are also meant to interfere with China's eventual reunification with Taiwan.
Zhu pointed out that such attempts posed a "serious threat" to the "relationship across the Taiwan Straits, the peace and stability in Asia-Pacific region, and the Sino-US ties."
The Chinese government and people from the very beginning expressed utter condemnation of and firm opposition to such acts, Zhu said, adding that China has repeatedly lodged complaints with the US on the matter.
He told the press that China took note of the fact that the US government opposed approval of the act by Congress.
He emphasized that if the US government wants to avoid irreparable damage to the Sino-US relationship, it must adhere to the three Sino-US joint communiques and relevant commitments made by the US side, fully understand the deviousness of such actions, and take swift and concrete measures to stop the approvalof the act.
