Sports Osaka Bids for 2008 Summer Olympics

Osaka submitted its bid on Monday to host the 2008 Summer Olympics, becoming the seventh candidate before the February 1 deadline for the quadrennial sports gala.

Osaka Mayor Takafumi Isomura presented documents for his city's bid to the Japanese Olympic Committee in Tokyo, said JOC spokesman Tetsuo Oyama.

Earlier, Beijing, Paris, Toronto, Istanbul, Seville, and Havana have already presented their candidacies for the 2008 Summer Games.

Osaka, the second-largest city in Japan, is hoping to become the fourth Japanese Olympic host after Tokyo, Sapporo and Nagano have previously staged the games, and Nagoya made an unsuccessful bid in 1988.

The International Olympic Committee will decide the winner in 2001. (Xinhua)
