China Jiang Zemin Urges Care for the Needy

Chinese President Jiang Zemin urged government leaders to better familiarize themselves with the living conditions of the Chinese populace and offer practical assistance to those in need during the Chinese New Year.

Jiang made these remarks during an inspection tour of homes of retired workers and some high-tech companies in Beijing.

Jiang, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, was accompanied by high-ranking officials from both central and local party and government departments.

He said that all cadres must remember that they are servants of the people. They must rely on the masses and show concern for them.

Experiencing both the bitter and sweet with masses can help cadres succeed in their work, Jiang added.

Jiang chatted with Wang Haili, a retired worker, at his home.

Spring Festival falls on February 5 this year and the Chinese will have an extended seven-day holiday.
