China China Sets Aviation Safety Target for 2000

Liu Jianfeng, director of the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China, urged the country's airlines to do their utmost on January 22 to ensure air traffic safety this year.

Liu also called on the country's aviation industry to improve their management and training in a bid to reduce accidents caused by human error.

More should be done to put an end to both in-flight and on-ground accidents, Liu said after he and presidents of the country's airlines signed documents acknowledging their responsibility for safety problems.

He stressed the need to continue formulating aviation regulations involving flight standards, navigation, air traffic control, airports and public security, while further improving aviation management.

Liu also urged the aviation industry to adopt advanced technology and satellite-guided navigation systems and anti-crash systems that are up to the international standards.

China's aviation industry bought 36 Boeing and Airbus aircraft last year, and leased another 10 to beef up the civil aviation fleet.
