China East China Province Cracks down Corruption

A total of 372 officials in east China's Zhejiang Province were put on trial last year on charges of corruption and accepting bribes.

More than 1,300 cases were investigated in the province last year, including 52 serious scams, each of which involved over one million yuan (about 120,000 US dollars).

Over the past five years, 829 officials were investigated and punished for corruption scandals in the province.

Xu Yunhong, former mayor of Ningbo city, was convicted of colluding with criminals and diverting public money for personal use, causing a loss of 1.2 billion yuan for the state.

The corruption scandal has been closely followed by both the public and leaders of the province.
