Thursday, January 20, 2000, updated at 20:27(GMT+8) China Guangdong Provincial CPPCC in Session The eighth Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) January 20 opened its third annual meeting in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province. A total of 1,175 people, including members of the national and provincial CPPCC committees, local party and government officials, officials of the Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC), as well as members to the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress attended January 20's session. The meeting was presided over by Guo Rongchang, chairman of the Guangdong Provincial CPPCC Committee. While addressing the meeting, Liu Weiming, vice-chairman of the Guangdong Provincial CPPCC Committee, urged provincial CPPCC members to do a good job of investigative research, and put forward more valuable opinions and advice concerning the work of the provincial government. Liu also told provincial CPPCC members to make full use of the close links with compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and people of Chinese origin residing abroad, and play a bigger role in promoting Guangdong's open-up strategy, maintaining long-term prosperity in Hong Kong and Macao, and in bringing about closer cooperation among Guangdong and Hong Kong and Macao.
