Sci-Tech China Establishes First Human Gene Databank

China's first human gene databank has been established in Shanghai.

The databank, set up by Shanghai Borong Gene Development Co., Ltd., contains detailed information about human genetic resources from China and abroad.

Local experts say the databank will greatly help China's human genome research and development of the bio-pharmaceutical industry.

There are now 30 laboratories in China involved in human genome research. Two gene sequencing centers will be set up in Beijing and Shanghai as part of the global Human Genome Project.

According to experts, genetic research on leukemia and liver, stomach, and esophagus cancers, high blood pressure and other major diseases has already reached high levels in China. (Xinhua)
