China's top legislator Li Peng said in Beijing January 18 at meeting with visiting Pakistani Chief Executive Pervez Musharaf that China is willing to work with Pakistan in promoting and developing bilateral relations in the new century.

Musharaf arrived January 17 morning on a two-day official visit. It is Musharaf's first China trip since he took the post last October.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said that it is in the fundamental interests of the people of China and Pakistan to maintain friendly relations, which will be helpful to peace and stability in South Asia.

China has always observed a good-neighborly policy and hopes to maintain and strengthen a peaceful and stable environment in its neighboring areas.

"China has always highly valued its relationship with its neighbor Pakistan," said Li. "We are willing to continue efforts to further expand bilateral relations."

Musharaf said that Pakistan greatly treasures its long-term, close friendship with China, and wishes to further develop this long-standing friendship in the 21st century.

The chief executive said that Pakistan has been greatly impressed with China's fast economic growth, and was pleased to see the return of Macao to China. He added that he believes the Taiwan issue will be finally resolved in a smooth way.

Musharaf also said that Pakistan aims to maintain peace and stability in South Asia, resolving all existing disputes with India, including the Kashmir issue in a peaceful manner.

He reiterated that Pakistan always opposes terrorism and any terrorist activities in the name of religion.

The chief executive is expected to return home January 18 night. (Xinhua)
