China Military Leader Stresses Family Planning

Yu Yongbo, member of the Central Military Commission and director of the General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, has called for more efforts to carry out family planning.

Addressing a military meeting on family planning in Beijing, Yu stressed that family planning constitutes one of the basic national policies of China and the military should take the lead in its implementation.

Officials at all levels should pay enough attention to the family planning work, and do more to ensure that the policy is vigorously implemented at all levels, he said.

In the meantime, more efforts should be done to strengthen the management of family planning and family planning services, the military leader noted.

Since it was introduced here in the early 1970s, family planning has proved to be a big success.

Over the past 30 years, China has reduced the number of births by 338 million due to its family planning program, government statistics show.
