World Swiss President Pledges Support for Armed Military Mission Abroad

Swiss President Adolf Ogi has vowed to push through new laws enabling soldiers to carry weapons on foreign missions, according to Swiss Radio International.

Speaking at a military base in canton Aargau Friday, Ogi said that he would even fight against his own party, if necessary.

Some right-wing members of Ogi's Swiss People's Party, including the Zurich parliamentarian, Christoph Blocher, oppose the reforms.

Strong opposition is also coming from certain left-wingers, who want Switzerland to do away with its armed forces altogether.

The proposed new laws will be put to nationwide vote in November.
