Swiss President Adolf Ogi has vowed to push through new laws enabling soldiers to carry weapons on foreign missions, according to Swiss Radio International. Speaking at a military base in canton Aargau Friday, Ogi said that he would even fight against his own party, if necessary. Some right-wing members of Ogi's Swiss People's Party, including the Zurich parliamentarian, Christoph Blocher, oppose the reforms. Strong opposition is also coming from certain left-wingers, who want Switzerland to do away with its armed forces altogether. The proposed new laws will be put to nationwide vote in November. |
