Sunday, January 09, 2000, updated at 11:10(GMT+8) Sports Capriati Beats Hingis to Win HK Women Tennis Former American Olympic champion Jennifer Capriati outpowered world top player Martina Hingis of Switzerland in full sets in Hong Kong Saturday to win the Hong Kong Millennium Cup women's tennis tournament. World ranked 23 Capriati beat Hingis, top seed of the four-day exhibition tournament, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6 and 6-3 in 1 hour and 55 minutes. "I am quiet happy to beat world top player today, I hope I can beat number one player in the coming grand slams and other tournaments, " said Capriati. "I regained some of my strength from the victory, " said Capriati, who had been world top ten in four straight years in the past early 1990s. Coming to the Hong Kong tournament to prepare for the coming Australian Open, the 23-year-old American came back with her powerful ground strokes and returns to win five games in a row in the first set and finally took the decider and the set 7-4 in nearly one hour. In the second set, Capriati relaxed herself and deduced her pace that let her opponent force the match into deciding set. She then pulled all together to dominate the third set to win her the first victory in new Millennium. "But I will forget this sooner or later, I'll just keep one by one to get back to the world top ten this year, " she added. Hingis hoped that she could meet Capriati again in the final of the coming Australian Open and see what happens there. To make Hingis feel a little better, she and Mary Pierce of France beat Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia and Virginie Razzano 6-2 and 6-1 to win the double title of the tournament.
