China Li Peng Stresses Learning From Foreign Parliaments

China's top legislator Li Peng has stressed that it is necessary for the country's National People's Congress (NPC) to learn from useful experience of parliaments of other countries.

Li, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, made the remarks in the preface of a newly-compiled book on the parliaments of 100 countries, which is expected to go on sale nationwide on January 1.

As a fundamental political system of the country, the People's Congress has been a historical choice of the Chinese nation, Li said.

History has proved that the system has promoted democracy and is suitable for China's specific conditions, Li noted.

In the course of improving the system, it is also essential to learn from outside experiences that could be applied to this country, Li said.

At present, the NPC is conducting active exchanges with parliaments of other countries. The book will be beneficial to the study of foreign parliaments, Li said.

The book is compiled jointly by the International News Department of the Xinhua News Agency and the Beijing Municipal People's Congress.

It contains information about the history, status, role, election, legislation process and features of parliaments of 100 countries.
