China NPC Standing Committee Closes Session

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature on December 25 completed its work in examining and discussing 31 proposals, including the revised amendment to the Law of Marine Environmental Protection, during its 13th session on December 17-25.

NPC Standing Committee chairman Li Peng attended and presided over the closing meeting in Beijing December 25 afternoon.

The meeting examined and passed the revisions of four draft laws, including the Law of Marine Environmental Protection, the Draft Amendment to the Corporate Law, the Draft Amendment to the Criminal Law, the Draft Decision on Enforcing State Budget Supervision, the Draft Decision on Enforcing Economic Supervision, and revisions of two draft laws, including that of the Legislation Law.

Also examined and deliberated during the session include four bills about issues of Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR) and a work report of the Preparatory Committee for the Macao Special Administrative Region under the NPC Standing Committee, and the draft decision for the convening of the third plenary session of the 9th NPC Standing Committee, as well as some other issues.

Li Peng urged police system nationwide to strengthen supervision on construction of local police forces and train qualified policemen in a bid to curb corruption, malpractice, and other misbehavior among the police force.

On the implementation of the country's Compulsory Education Law, Li noted that educational investment must be properly used and any defalcation activity in the field must be punished.

He also emphasized further developing normal education, protecting legal rights of teachers and offering compulsory education for school-age children.
