Culture What are Chinese Satisfied With, Concerned About?

According to a poll which appeared on the front page of "China Youth Daily" December 23, while the Chinese people are "satisfied" with economic reform, they are not content with the "general mood of society" and the widenening gap between the rich and the poor.

A total of 2,800 people were polled in 60 cities by the State Commission for Economic Restructuring and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

More than 60 percent polled are satisfied with cultural life, the international status of China, objective reporting in the press and social development.

However, more than 80 percent were unsatisfied with "the general mood of the society" and the widening gap between the rich and the poor.

Over 60 percent said they were disappointed with employment, the quality of consumption goods, environmental protection, public security, social welfare and unlawful practices by government organs. Falling sick, losing job, financial difficulties in the family and price hikes were among the top concerns.

More than 80 percent, particularly workers and women, admitted increasing pressure in their lives. However, about 70 percent believed that things will turn better next year.

Many place high expectations on housing, education, scientific research, the political system and caring for the elderely, while others worry about medicare reforms, SOE reforms and employment.
