China China Commemorates 10th Anniversary of UNICEF Convention

A gathering to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the "Convention on the Right of the Child" was held at Beijing on December 13.

The commemoration, co-sponsored by the Women and Children Working Committee of the State Council and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), was aimed at showing the Chinese government's achievement in implementing the Convention and the " Plan for Chinese Children's Development in the 1990s."

Peng Peiyun, vice-chairwoman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, said that protecting children's rights has attracted the attention of the entire world and that "helping every child enjoy a better future" has become the common task of everyone.

She asked all of society to create a favorable environment for children's growth, as to implement the principle of "giving priority to children."

Chinese children presented a long picture scroll they had painted called "The 21st Century Will Be More Glorious" at the meeting spot, and it will be given to UNICEF.

The "Convention on the Right of the Child," approved by United Nations in 1989, is the most widely accepted international convention on protecting children's rights, with 191 member countries signing it.
