Saturday, November 27, 1999, updated at 10:05(GMT+8) China Beijing Holds Forum to Mark 100th Birthday of PLA General A Forum commemorating the 100th birthday of Dong Qiwu, a famous general of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and an outstanding strategist, was held in Beijing on November 26. Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended the forum, together with Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee. Wang, also head of the CPC Central Committee United Front Department, extended his sincere respect to the cherished memory of this great patriot and loyal fighter of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC). Wang also extended cordial greetings to the relatives of the late General Dong. Wang said that General Dong was a great patriot who made a lot of contributions during his lifetime to the motherland and the Chinese people. In September 1949, General Dong's 90,000-strong army broke away from KMT military forces and peacefully liberated Suiyuan in north China. The forum was presided over by Chen Junsheng, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.
