China China Intensifies Crackdown on Drug-Plagued Areas

Some 300 kilograms of narcotics have been seized in the past six months in 17 areas in China known to have the country's worst drug problems, the Ministry of Public Security said on November 25.

The ministry identified these areas, which cover 11 provinces and autonomous regions, as most prone to drug-related crimes at the beginning of this year in a move to spur local governments to take anti-drug actions.

As a result, local governments and public security bureaus in these areas started to launch intensified anti-drug campaigns since April.

So far, 4,995 drug-related criminal cases were investigated during the period, 247.968 kilograms of heroin and 52.973 kilograms of opium seized, 34 crime rings destroyed, 11 crime harbors for drug traffickers and addicts uncovered, and 2,142 criminal suspects arrested, the Anti-Narcotics Bureau of the ministry said.

The 11 provinces and autonomous regions on the list are: Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Gansu, Henan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shaanxi and Ningxia.
