Business HK Stocks Set Record High Since 1997

Hong Kong stocks set a new record high since 1997 as the Hang Seng Index ended up 108 points at 15,393 points Tuesday following strong gains on China Telecom, Hang Seng Bank and Hutchison shares.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 108.17 points, or 0.71 percent, to close at 15,393.20 Tuesday. It was the highest close since 1997.

The turnover was HK$13.170 billion (US$1.688 billion) Tuesday, HK$1.273 billion (US$163 million) more than the previous volume of HK$11.897 billion (US$1.525 billion).

Sub-indices of Finance, Utilities and Properties dropped 0.21 percent, 0.63 percent and 1.45 percent, respectively, while Commerce and Industry gained 2.48 percent.

China-related stocks ended with the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index down 2.21 percent and Hang Seng China-Affiliated Corporations Index down 0.96 percent.

The Hong Kong blue chips went up 54.94 points, or 0.36 percent, to open at 15,339.97 Tuesday.
