Sci-Tech China Strengthens Wildlife Protection

After decades of work, China has built up an all-but-complete system of wildlife and bio- diversity protection.

The country has established 630 preservation zones of various kinds, covering a total area of 61.5 million hectares, accounting for 6.41 percent of China's territory.

Of the 94 nature reserves in China, 15 have been listed among the world's biosphere protective network.

China has also built 230 wildlife breeding farms, 14 wildlife protection centers and 18 offices to control the import and export of endangered animals. Over 400 gene banks for rare plants have been built in various parts of the country.

The number of wetlands in China has increased to 152, which occupy 1,300 hectares in area. Since the early 1980s, the central government has beefed up its effort to protect wetlands, the natural ecological systems often referred to as the earth's " kidneys." The Chinese government is organizing a comprehensive survey on environmental quality at wetlands.
