Saturday, November 20, 1999, updated at 10:58(GMT+8) Sci-Tech Motorola to Stay Out of China's Telecom Service Motorola's CEO Chris Galvin pledged in Beijing on November 19 that Motorola will continue to stick to the manufacturing sector and has no plans to enter the Chinese telecommunications service sector along with China Telecom and China Unicom. Galvin said that Motorola will continue to build partnership relations with China after the country's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). He said China's entry in the WTO will benefit not only China but also overseas investors like Motorola, and he pledged to work with "other American executives who share my view to encourage prompt action from our Congress." Galvin believes that China's WTO commitments are complimentary to China's own economic reform and development agenda, and will boost investor confidence and global recognition. In addition, the Chinese economy will integrate into the world track, and become more open, freer, and stronger. Chinese enterprises will learn international business practices, put more efforts into improving the quality of products, and engage in research and development, he added. He said that Motorola will continue to carry out its localization strategy by expanding the use of local staff and local content, now 80 percent of the management of the Motorola ( China) Electronics Ltd. Galvin said Motorola will also enlarge the number of research and development centers in China from the current 18 to 25 in the near future. At the same time, the company will also strengthen cooperation with Beijing University and several other top Chinese universities.
