Sports Kuwait Qualifies for Sydney Olympics Soccer

Kuwait became the last Asian team to qualify for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games soccer tournament after beating Qatar 2-1 in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday.

Kuwait won Group A ahead of Qatar and Saudi Arabia to join South Korea and Japan in the Olympics.

It is the third time that the Kuwaitis qualify for the Games after appearances in 1980 and 1992.

Hamad Al Tayyar scored a double for Kuwait, one in each half; while the only Qatari goal came from Adel Jodoua Ali in the second half.

Japan, who had already booked their tickets to Sydney last weekend, beat Thailand 6-0 in Bangkok.

South Korea beat Bahrain 2-1 in Seoul with goals from Kim Eun-jung and Park Jin-sop to finish the qualifying tournament unbeaten.
