Business Farmland Renovation Yield Results in Shanxi and Sichuan

16.3 million mu of high-yield farmland were created in the 1992-1999 period under a land renovation project in Shanxi Province.. Scientech and industrial development was making headway in tandem with land renovation.

0ver 6 billion catties of grain, accounting for 2/3 total grain crops in the province, were produced annually from 16.3 million mu of land which make up 1/3 acreage in the province.

Under this project, corn and wheat fields were covered with plastic sheeting, over 140 categories of farming techniques were found, 2900 production bases were opened up, 260 enterprises were built up and 432 wholesale markets were opened for farming and sideline products. As a result, average annual per capita peasants' income went up over 650 yuan.

A farmland renovation drive is in full swing in Sichuan Province.

Up to November 5, 0.82 million mu of middle- and low-yield farmland has been retooled. It was learnt that the middle- and low-yield land makes up 41% of the 67.424 million um of all farmland in Sichuan. 66.64 million cu m of earth and stone were moved for this purpose. And 1985 irrigation canals and ditches totaling 1.02 million m have been dug complete with planting of trees on 94000 mu. The province has devoted half of funds earmarked for water conservancy and irrigation capital construction to farmland renovation.
