Sci-Tech Beijing Fights Fire on 'Net

Beijing put fire-fighting information on its Internet website on November 9 as part of its campaign of public awareness designated by the Beijing municipal government.

At the city's website one can learn about fire-fighting techniques, rules and regulations, as well as fire-related service organizations at : http://www.bjxf.gov.cn.

A letter box prepared for the Beijing fire chief is also collecting suggestions and ideas about the work of the city's fire fighting department.

Thirty-seven people died and 77 were injured in 4,519 fires in Beijing from January to October this year, according to an official from the Beijing fire fighting department. These fires also caused nearly 30 million yuan (about 3.6 million US dollars) in economic losses.

Also as part of the campaign, more than 100,000 leaflets were handed out informing people how to use electricity safely, how to prevent fires in the home, and how to save oneself in a fire.

Some 43 fire fighting stations were open to the public today in order to help local residents learn more about fire fighting.
