World 527 People Dead or Missing in Floods in Central Vietnam

Heavy floods that have hit Vietnam's central provinces over the past week had left 527 people dead or missing and caused material losses of over 710 billion Vietnamese dong (50.7 million US dollars), Vietnam News Agency reported on November 7.

According to the latest reports, the death toll was the highest in Thua Thien-Hue province, reaching 341, followed by Quang Nam, Quang Tri, Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen.

In November last year, the central region was hit by three consecutive tropical storms which killed 267 people and injured 92 others. Total losses were then put at 1,295 billion Vietnamese dong (93 million US dollars).

Meanwhile, the climate reportedly remains complicated in the central provinces with much clouds, although rains have stopped. Water levels are going down slowly in those provinces.

People in other parts of the country are supporting the flood-stricken area by all means. A government delegation led by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Huy Ngo arrived in Quang Ngai on Saturday.

The provinces continue to receive relief aid from the government, fellow compatriots at home and abroad as well as international organizations, local media reports said.

On Friday and Saturday, more than 800 million Vietnamese dong (57,200 US dollars) and dozens of tons of food and clothes were sent to the seven flood-ravaged provinces.
