Sci-Tech 11th International Science and Peace Week Starts

The 11th International Science and Peace Week started on November 7 in Beijing, focusing on ways to develop scientific research, and ideas for revitalizing China and maintaining peace in the world.

The event, which runs from November 7-14, is hosted by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) along with 42 government groups.

"International Week will help to push forward the process of science and peace in China, as well as international exchanges in the field," Zhou Guangzhao, president of CAST, said at the opening ceremony this morning.

This year's activities will include symposia on population and environment and sustainable social development, health and people' s living conditions, and education for young people in the 21st century.

During the week, 12 scientific and cultural museums will open to the public free of charge.

In December 1988, the United Nations 43rd General Assembly named the week that includes November 11 as the International Week for Science and Peace.

In the past 10 years, China has organized more than 600 related activities involving some 90 million participants, including 146 foreign ambassadors to China and 14 representatives from the United Nations organizations residing in China. (Xinhua)
